Artificial Humanity

Speculation about artificial intelligence (AI) has reached a feverous pitch over the past ten years. Never before has such a technological theme captured the attention and imagination of a generation. How many articles in the popular press deal with this subject every day? How many movies have been produced by Hollywood provoking us and scaring us about the future of machines and AI? How many specialist conferences around the world deal with this issue? And finally, how much time, energy and money are being invested in this research, not only from the tech giants, but also governments?

If you want to know more about AI from a philosophical point of view, this book is for you.

"We are grateful for experts like Fr. Larrey that choose to share their insights and contribute to the discussion on matters that impact the future of our human family"

H.E. Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, KUOM GCMG - 9th President of Malta

“A must read for those who seek to avoid resorting to extremes of “hype” and “scare” tactics concerning human-machine interactions.”

Michelle A. Williams, ScD - Dean, Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health

BIOGRAPHY

PHILIP LARREY

Fr. Philip Larrey, Ph.D., is a Catholic priest and professor of philosophy at Boston College. Prior to Boston College he held the Chair of Logic and Epistemology at the Pontifical Lateran University in the Vatican, and was the Dean of the Philosophy Department. His publications deal with the philosophy of knowledge and critical thinking. He has published several books concerning the effects of the new digital era on society. Two of his recent works highlight this theme: Futuro ignoto (IF Press) and Connected World (Penguin). The Italian translation of this latter was published by Mondadori in 2018, entitled, Dove inizia il futuro.

For years he has been following the philosophical implications of the rapid development of artificial intelligence. With candor, he challenges industry leaders he comes into contact with at the Vatican to discuss how technology is shaping the fabric of our society. His new book, Artificial Humanity, delves into a more philosophical discussion of what AI research means for all of humanity.
Fr. Philip Larrey is proudly the chairman of Humanity 2.0, a vehicle for facilitating collaborative ventures between the traditionally siloed public, private and faith-bases sectors.

Our mission is to identify impediments to human progress and work collaboratively across sectors to remove them by sourcing and scaling bold and innovative solutions.
